Position Title: Female Campus Minister
Department: Student Affairs
Reports to: Vice President of Student Affairs
The mission of the Campus Ministry Office is to disciple wholeness into the personal, relational, and ministry lives of students by providing pastoral counseling and relational mentoring, modeling a shepherding approach to ministry to be replicated in students’ future ministries. Institutional Goals supported by Departments: IG 2, 3
*Outside of the Pastoral Counseling role, this position is designated as a Campus Security Authority (CSA), will be required to participate in CSA training, and is required to immediately forward all reports of Clery Act crimes brought to their attention to the Clery Compliance Officer.
A. Summary
Campus ministers provide OCC students with relational access to experienced ministry leaders who are prepared to invest in the lives of emerging leaders. Campus ministers contribute to wholeness in the personal, relational, and ministry lives of students through dialogue, mentoring, and life coaching. This specific role is responsible for providing pastoral mentorship, discipleship, and counseling support to female students in settings where shared lived experience, privacy considerations, and ministry effectiveness require the position to be filled by a female.
B. Primary Duties and Responsibilities
1. Maintain a highly visible on-campus presence, being available in the Student Center, Dining Hall, and residence halls as a dorm devotion speaker when requested, maximizing opportunities for intentional, meaningful interactions with female students
2. Maintain an office schedule and environment that allows students access to private and personal conversations
3. Intentionally build relationships with female students, helping them process their life events, studies, and initial ministry experiences, creatively utilizing environments that allow for natural, informal, relationally based conversations
4. Partner with the counseling services provided by OCC, referring students at appropriate times, as well as receiving students referred by the counselors
5. Assist in annual “healthy relationships” seminar(s) for engaged and married couples
6. Teach life, relationship, and ministry principles to individuals and small groups of students, particularly female students
7. Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by the supervisor
C. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
1. Knowledge of (but also ongoing curiosity about) the emerging generation, and a self-motivation to continue learning through reading and personal observation
2. Knowledge of church operations and challenges, current trends in practice and philosophy, and emerging opportunities and challenges
3. Ability to listen well to students, understand the issues they are facing, and give wise and relevant counsel, both to individuals and groups
4. Insight and discernment regarding students’ personal lives, issues, and the unique challenges they may be facing
5. Deep personal integrity and the ability to guard sensitive information, shared in confidence, with grace and trustworthiness
6. Ability to maintain a positive relationship with other campus departments
D. Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
1. Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent certification in a counseling field) OR
2. Twelve years in some form of pastoral ministry and/or counseling experience
E. Work Environment and Physical Requirements
This position is primarily in a professional office setting. In this role, there will be routine use of office equipment, including a computer, photocopier, scanner, and telephone system. The primary burden in this role will be emotional—an ability to handle the struggles and hardships students face.
Must be able to focus and concentrate with precision on a computer screen. Reaching, stooping, standing, kneeling, bending, twisting, and walking are all required.
This role typically works weekdays, but additional training may be required on occasion outside regular workdays.
Travel is not a routine part of this role, but continuing education travel may be requested occasionally.
